EN APARTÉ

An intimate interview with sewing enthusiasts who share their Atelier Brunette experience and a little bit about themselves too.

A sincere dive into their creative world, their inspirations and a good dose of good humor.

GUEST OF THE MONTH

From the Instagram account @joliesbobines

Julie lives in Paris.

She is 1.68m tall and wears size 40/M.

Can you introduce yourself in three words?

I'm Julie. (Just kidding!) Curious, passionate, persevering.

How long have you been sewing?

I've been sewing since I was 20.

What does sewing give you?

A feeling of accomplishment, of pride. Sewing soothes me as much as it can stress me out, but above all it's a passion!

How did sewing come into your life?

I have always loved fashion and photography. I started sewing with a family friend, Béatrice Moreau, a corset maker and crinoline maker (she had notably created pieces for the Alaïa and Christian Lacroix fashion shows… then she was the director of the Corset School in Paris).

She passed on to me her love for sewing and the pursuit of perfection. I really started sewing regularly with my blog, which I launched back in 2011.

Music or silence when you sew?

Mostly background noise, often a series, of which I end up missing 3/4 haha.

What is your go-to pattern from Atelier Brunette? The one you could sew again and again?

Wow, there are several! LE Trench (I've sewn it 3 times, and it's not a small project ;)) but I also really love LA Chemise and LE Blazer .

Is your ideal palette more about "bold contrasts" or "tone-on-tone harmony"?

I like to mix things up; I get bored quickly in just one genre!

LE Trench (I've sewn it 3 times, and it's not a small piece ;))

LE TRENCH

Can you tell me what he inspires in you?

Comfort and style.

What's your favorite color for Water Repellent Cotton?

Right now it's Oat Chocolate , but I can quickly change my mind depending on the weather, my mood…

What was the last place your trench coat accompanied you?

Yesterday, for a stroll in Paris.

Are you more of a country or city person?

The city for living, the countryside for a break.

Are you team welt pockets or team patch pockets?

Aesthetically I like both, but to sew: the welt pockets (I have a big weakness for challenges).

Do you have an anecdote or an improbable story to tell about sewing?

Not really any improbable anecdotes, but some very wonderful encounters. Sewing has allowed me to forge connections, to exchange ideas, to share knowledge, and perhaps that's the most beautiful story.

You've sewn LE Trench several times, we love seeing you having fun with our patterns and fabrics!

You added some small details to personalize them, can you tell us more about them?

I lengthened the last one because I'm 1.68m tall and the Atelier Brunette pattern is for a height of 1.65m, I believe. And I simply wanted a longer trench coat. I also tightened the sleeve cuffs on two versions; I think it adds a slightly sharper touch.

If you had to give one piece of advice to those who want to get started, what would it be?

First, test the welt pockets on a scrap of fabric. It's not that difficult, but it requires precision (that's the secret) and above all, don't be afraid to give it a try.

AND FINALLY…

What is your mantra in sewing?

Precision makes beauty.

Always learn something new.

As beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside.

And what Atelier Brunette piece is next on your sewing project list?

LE Manteau ! LE Manteau!

Prince of Wales or Tartan ?

Tartan without hesitation!
