PAIR COLORS AND PRINTS

A question of balance, intuition, and the joy of composing?

For a long time, the three-color rule has been seen as a simple way to put together an outfit without making a mistake.

An almost reassuring formula that has, over time, become a fixed truth.

However, it is never the number of colors that creates dissonance, but rather how they interact with each other.

At Atelier Brunette, we like to think of color as a living material: instinctive, sensitive, expressive.

A palette built as much by contrasts as by nuances, prints, textures, or the light of a fabric.

So, the three-color rule: good advice or a false restriction?

5 COLOR HARMONIES

MONOCHROMATIC HARMONY

A single color available in various shades.

Monochrome relies on the same hue worked in different intensities.

A simple and intuitive way to create an elegant and cohesive look.

COMPLEMENTARY HARMONY

Colors that are opposite on the color wheel

Complementary colors naturally create contrast and energy.

A balanced opposition that catches the eye without losing harmony.

ADJACENT COMPLEMENTARY HARMONY

Three colors built around a complementary color

This harmony is based on a main color accompanied by the neighboring shades of its complementary color.

The result: a contrasting but more subtle and nuanced palette.

TRIADIC HARMONY

Three colors arranged in a triangle on the color wheel

Triadic harmony provides rhythm and vitality while maintaining strong visual balance.

A bolder way to play with color, while maintaining natural coherence.

ANALOG HARMONY

Colors that are adjacent on the color wheel

Analogous harmony creates soft, fluid, and intuitive associations.

A beautiful color gradient, often more vibrant than a monochrome while remaining very harmonious.

Regardless of the chosen color scheme, neutral colors (Off-White, Black, Deep Charcoal) remain valuable allies.

They help balance a silhouette, tone down a bolder combination, or give a print room to breathe.

THE ART OF MIXING PRINTS

Finding the right guiding principle

Pairing multiple prints can seem even more daunting than mixing colors.

However, the logic often remains the same: find a common element, such as color or print.

With Camille's advice and perspective on color, we continue to believe that there are no truly immutable rules.

These pairing principles are guidelines to better understand what instinctively attracts us and to dare more.

Because color tells something personal, almost emotional: the essential thing always remains the pleasure of composing.
