THE ELEGANT

ANNIKA

GUEST OF THE MONTH

From the Instagram account @Frau.aw

Annika lives in Gronau, in western Germany, is 1.76 m tall and wears a size 36/38.

Can you introduce yourself in three words?

Pragmatic, relaxed, spont.

How long have you been sewing?

I have been sewing for about nine years. It was curiosity for something new, the pleasure of creating and my interest in fashion that led me to it.

What does that bring you?

I love being creative and designing unique pieces for my wardrobe. I enjoy the challenge of adapting patterns to my personal style. It brings me serenity and true satisfaction.

What is, for you, is the ideal atmosphere for sewing?

No stress - having time, high-quality materials, well designed sewing patterns and a cup of coffee.

If you had to describe yourself through sewing, what would your keywords be?

I am with myself, clean, exactly, just trying to sew what suits me, always looking to learn something new.

What is your go-to pattern from Atelier Brunette? The one you could sew again and again?

That’s not easy to answer because the patterns are timeless and the materials are perfectly coordinated. I think LA Chemise Boyish in Optic White Oxford is a must-have and should be in every wardrobe.

What is your ideal color palette within our shade card?

Denim, Deep Charcoal, Optic White, Crispy Brownie.

Can you present the “full denim” outfit you made? Why this choice?

I like outfits that come from one colour family. It’s always a good base that can be expanded.

I am with myself, clean, exactly,

just trying to sew what suits me.

DENIM

THE SENSORY AND TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE

First encounter: what was your first impression upon discovering the Denim Atelier Brunette?

My first impression was balance - structure in the trousers, softness in the shirt, working effortlessly together.

The meeting of textures: How would you describe the tactile contrast between Indigo Denim and Soft Denim?

The tactile contrast between Indigo Denim is truly fascinating. Each fabric expressed its personality exactly as expected. The Soft Denim lived up to its promise of flexibility: fluid, comfortable and easy to shape. It was ideal for a shirt with a tailor mad spirit, offering structure without ever feeling restrictive. The Indigo Denim, by contrast, brought that reassuring hold we look for in a great pair of jeans. It supports the cut, enhances the silhouette and gains even more character with wear.

Two denims, two missions - both perfectly fulfilled. The contrast creates balance - one grounds the silhouette, the others softens it.

How would you describe the feel of Indigo Denim and Soft Denim in three words?

Indigo Denim: structured, authentic, durable

Soft Denim: supple, lightweight, comfortable

The first wash ritual: At Atelier Brunette, we always recommend caring for the Indigo even before the first cut. How did you approach this pre-sewing step to preserve its radiance?

Atelier Brunette already has some good tips for caring for the fabrics, which I also followed.

A salt-water soak can help fixing the dye and soften the denim.

The first step is cutting: how did it feel?

The Indigo Denim felt stable and confident to cut, making it ideal for a structured project like LE Jean Wide Leg.

The sewing experience: how did the assembly go under the machine?

What I loved most was how each fabric brought its own personality to the process. With Indigo Denim, it was the satisfaction of working with something that feels substantial and reliable — every stitch builds confidence, and seeing a silhouette take shape so cleanly is genuinely rewarding. With Soft Denim, it was the effortless fluidity and ease: the way it moves under your hands, drapes naturally, and adapts to every detail made the sewing experience playful and creative.

Two very different fabrics, two very different joys — both equally inspiring.

The flexibility of Indigo Denim: how did you experience it?

The Atelier Brunette Indigo Denim strikes a perfect balance between structure and movement. While it has the reassuring firmness you expect from classic denim, it’s not rigid — there’s just enough give to allow comfortable wear and subtle shaping. It holds its form beautifully for jeans or tailored silhouettes, yet still feels lively under your hands and body. In short: structured but not stiff, supportive but never restrictive.

The ideal weight: is it the perfect balance between delicacy and structure for you?

Yes, absolutely. It's dense enough to give structure to jeans, but light enough to remain comfortable to wear and easy to sew.

For me, it's the perfect balance.

STYLE AND HEARTWARMING

Why did you choose Indigo Denim for LE Jean Wide Leg and Soft Denim for LA Chemise Boyish?

The choice came down to matching fabric characteristics to garment needs. For the Wide Leg Jeans, the Indigo Denim was ideal because of its structure and hold. It supports the wide silhouette, maintains clean lines, and ensures the legs drape elegantly without sagging — giving the jeans a polished, flattering shape. For the Boyish Shirt, the Soft Denim was perfect because of its fluidity and lightweight feel. It moves naturally with the body, softens around seams and collars, and creates that relaxed, effortless shirt style that’s comfortable to wear and easy to style. Indigo Denim builds structure below, Soft Denim adds ease above — a perfectly balanced pairing.

Comfort: does Soft Denim provide the immediate comfort expected for LA Chemise Boyish?

Absolutely, the Soft Denim delivers that instant, wearable comfort you want from a boyish shirt. It’s lightweight, breathable, and supple, so it drapes gently over the body without restricting movement. Right from the first touch, it feels soft and inviting, and once worn, it moves effortlessly with the wearer, giving that relaxed, “just right” comfort that makes a shirt feel like it was made for everyday life.

Choosing the shade: which one is your favorite?

For me, it’s hard to resist the deep Indigo — there’s something timeless and versatile about it. It has that classic denim depth that feels both rich and alive, and it beautifully highlights structure and silhouette in garments like jeans. That said, the softer shades in the range are wonderfully delicate and airy, perfect for relaxed tops or lighter pieces — but if I had to pick one, Indigo wins for its elegance and enduring appeal.

The life of Indigo: how did you find its radiance after the first wash?

The color softened slightly but kept its richness.

The contrast with Soft Denim: why does it work so well?

The contrast creates depth without being loud and balance which makes the full denim look worker.

In this full Denim aesthetic: what seduced you?

It is the balance - the silhouette feels strong yet calm, structured but never rigid, It’s a full denim look that remains effortless and wearable. The look lets the fabric and the patterns speak for themselves.

The desire to sew again: other denim projects?

There are some sewing patterns I can imagine using these fabrics: LE Blazer is on my sewing list.

Your advice to a “Brunette” hesitating to sew jeans?

Just get started. The fabric is easy to work with, use a denim needle, Fake time.  Follow the pattern instructions, they are excellent.

EMOTION AND HERITAGE

Your first memory linked to a denim garment?

Denim has always meant reliability. A garment you wear without thinking. I find that same familiar, reassuring feeling in Atelier Brunette Denim.

The iconic piece: which one would you keep for ten years?

LE Jean Wide Leg. They are timeless, versatile and evolve naturally with wear. It’s the kind of piece that evolves with you and never feels out of place.

What differentiates Atelier Brunette Denim from others?

It’s the quiet balance between structure and softness with the perfect weight without stretch. It reveals its quality over time.

Do you think these pieces will stay with you for a long time?

Yes! The fabric holds its shape and remains comfortable, which makes the pieces long-lasting.

Tell us about your 100% Atelier Brunette Denim look.

LE Jean Wide Leg and LA Chemise Boyish. A modern, relaxed, structured silhouette. This look is long-lasting and can be easily combined with accessories to build different styles. Both patterns highlight the fabrics qualities without over-dressing it.

Can you tell us more about your Jean Wide Leg?

LE Jean Wide Leg is a modern, comfortable volume supported by a Denim that keeps the shade clean.

You’ve sewed several versions of LA Chemise Boyish. Which fabrics do you recommend?

Soft Denim and the Oxford are my favorites but I also like poplin.
